Product Classification
- HTS and ECCN classification is required on import/export documents to ship product around the world.
- Importer/Exporter is responsible for the correct classification on their documents.
- Classification expertise is essential:
- In-House
- 3rd Party
- Government rulings
EXPORTS:
- Export Classification Control Number (ECCN)
- A 5-digit number followed by a series (sub-ECCN)
Example: 3A001.a.5.a.3.
- Any number ending in 001,002, etc… represents a controlled item. Meaning it will require a license to ship to certain countries.

- Dual Use – Military or Commercial
- The following criteria will determine if a part is for military or commercial end use and may require an export license:
- ECCN classification
- End user/End use

IMPORTS:
- Harmonized Tariff System (HTS)
- A ten-digit number
- Different for each country, but the first six digits are global.
